Water voles have previously been recorded in the drainage dyke. Water vole populations have declined significantly in the UK but if the dyke continues to be managed sympathetically, The Hook has the potential to become a local stronghold for this species. The dyke is very fragile and susceptible to pollution incidents, scrub growth resulting in dense shading, and invasion by non-native species such as Himalayan balsam. The water vole is a Nottinghamshire Biodiversity Action Plan priority species and their habitat is protected by The Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981. This means that the management and expansion of their habitat will be a priority on this site.
