Scrub

The Hook contains areas of scrub, an important habitat which is a mix of open areas, shrubs and small trees. Scrub needs maintaining to keep it open and stop it becoming dense woodland. It is particularly good for feeding and nesting birds. In 2021, volunteers helped plant 100 native shrubs on The Hook, including several species of wild rose, alder buckthorn, guelder-rose, spindle-berry and cherry plum. The shrubs are threaded throughout the central part of the reserve and along by the dyke and provide food for insects, flowers for pollinators and berries for birds, all with the aim of increasing the biodiversity of The Hook.
