Activities and events

Friends of The Hook organise monthly working parties on the first Sunday of the month – meet 2pm at the Mona Road entrance. All equipment and tools can be supplied. Join us at our first ever ‘Apple Day’, with lots for everyone to enjoy. We welcome offers of help – whether that’s baking a cake for refreshments or helping out on the day.

Apple Day will take place at two locations – All Hallows Halls on Pierrepont Road and at the Community Orchard, Mona Road entrance to The Hook Nature Reserve. Timings below.

Sunday 7 September Working Party Meet 2pm at Mona Road entrance

We’ll be tying markers to shrubs and saplings so they don’t get chopped when the tractor comes to cut and collect.  Setting out canes for the harvest mouse survey. Also clearing blackthorn from the pond enclosure.

Jobs for everyone. Bring secateurs and gloves if you have them, otherwise we can supply equipment.

Sunday 3 August Working Party Meet 2pm at Mona Road entrance

We’ll be continuing to work on the butterfly bank, weeding out strong growing invasive plants, giving the butterfly attracting plants space to grow.

We’ll also be removing invasive Himalayan balsam from the river bank. Bring gardening gloves if you have them, or we can supply.

Sunday 6 July Working Party Meet 2pm at Mona Road entrance

We’ll be clearing around the pond and weeding the butterfly bank. Also moving branches from orchard pruning and creating a dry hedge.

Sunday June 2nd Working Party Meet 2pm at Mona Road entrance.

Will you help spread some stone to stabilise the muddy paths on The Hook Nature Reserve? We’re working our way through the reserve improving the paths. We can supply wheelbarrows and spades – or bring your own if you have them.

Sunday May 5th Working Party. Meet 2pm Mona Rd entrance. We’ll be looking after the riverside trees and planting a few replacements; spreading woodchip around fruit trees in the orchard; sowing wildflower seed on muddy patches. And for those who like to be really energetic, spreading gravel to stabilise muddy paths.

Sunday May 5th Dawn Chorus Walk 5.45am Meet bottom of Holme Grove steps.

Sunday April 7th Working Party Meet 2pm at the Mona Road entrance. We’ll be planting a plum tree in the orchard and some wild roses on the wildflower walk. We’ll also be sowing some meadow seed on the bare patches of winter mud. Bring a spade and/or a rake if you have one, or we can supply equipment
