The pond was created in March 2014 to further increase the biodiversity of the reserve, It provides habitat for amphibians such as frogs, toads and newts, for insects such as dragonflies and damselflies and also for birds, bats and hedgehogs . Unfortunately the pond liner failed, but thanks to a grant we were able to employ contractors to reline the pond.
Frogspawn in the pond A rainbow of wildflowers on the butterfly bank
Recent work near the pond included the creation of a ‘butterfly bank’ – a south-facing bank of earth topped with crushed limestone providing the right conditions for butterfly-friendly plants. Chunks of stone set into the bank warm up in the sun offering a place for butterflies to bask. Shaded areas on the north side of the bank and in the shadow of the rocks offer the microclimate that some species of butterflies need to cool themselves down.
