The range of habitats on The Hook attract many species of butterfly from early spring onwards. The photograph of the small tortoiseshell below was taken in March, and this year we have also seen yellow brimstone, small and large white, orange tip, speckled wood peacock, red admiral… just to name a few!
Recently, painted lady butterflies have been spotted on The Hook and around the local area – 2026 is looking like a good year for them, so look out while you are out and about! The butterfly bank near the pond is looking beautiful and is of course a good place to spot different butterfly species, including painted ladies that feed on the vipers bugloss there.
Our team of butterfly recorders do weekly surveys so we are lucky to have a really good idea of the range of species that can be enjoyed on The Hook. You can read more about them on our butterfly page.
You can also sign up to our newsletter for monthly updates what’s happening on The Hook.
